What is Yoga? – a Philosophy or a Discipline

Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline which focuses on bringing harmony between body, breath, mind, heart and spirit for a holistic life. It is science of healthy, peaceful, harmonious living with self and others. The practice of yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, man and nature. The ultimate aim of yoga is Self Actualization and Self Realization.

Generally the term yoga is understood as means, methods, and techniques. Sage Vyasa in his commentary on Patanjali Yoga Sutras, says “Yogena Yogo Jnatavya” means Yoga should be known through practice of yoga, as yoga itself is a teacher.
