What is Stress?
Stress is a state of both physical and mental imbalance caused especially by the disturbance of the hormonal system and metabolic system. Hence each and every cells and organ are affected by stress. All our physical and mental functions are mainly controlled by two faculties; one is emotional faculty called as limbic system and the other is intellectual faculty called as the cortex. Proper coordination between these two faculties is absolutely necessary for the smooth functioning of our daily activities and overall health. But during stress, this coordination is strongly disturbed and the limbic system becomes too strong and over-activated to deal with the fight or flight situations. If this limbic system remains over-activated for a long time, then it becomes a habitual pattern and the stress mechanism get automatized. The vital organs of the body start degeneration once the automatic stress pattern gets established which leads to the manifestation of many psycho-somatic disorders like Insomnia, Constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcer, Migraine, Allergy etc. In these cases, the pathology remains the same even though one takes medicines. The medicines can give some temporary relief to the symptoms of the pathology but that does not work on the root cause of the diseases. At most medicines can only shut down the emotional centre because of the presence of some chemicals in it. But the medicine cannot reverse the automaticity of the emotional centre or bring a change to the established programming in it.
Body-Mind Connection and Meditation
Body and mind are deeply connected with each other. Our body is the gross form of mind and mind is the subtle form of the body. Our thoughts control our actions and it is essential that we are capable enough to have a good and positive influence over the mind and meditation helps a person do exactly that. It moulds us in a way which supports healthy decision making in our everyday lives and helps in mental and spiritual growth. The basic aim of meditation is the attainment of peace, calmness, awareness and self-discovery.
